Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage - Fully Remote (US & Canada)

Remote 190K - 200K Contract

Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage

Remote • United States

About Our Client

Our client is a profitable, well-capitalized independent power producer developing, owning, and operating some of the world’s largest clean energy resources. They deliver affordable, reliable power to utilities and large customers across the U.S., plus more projects across various stages of development.

Backed by long-standing investors, the company is in a rapid growth phase and is building and operating billions of dollars in renewables and storage assets. Their culture is grounded in collaboration, creativity, and operational excellence.

About the Role

The Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage will lead end-to-end technical execution of high-voltage (HV) switchyards, substations, and medium-voltage (MV) systems across utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. This role serves as the central hub for critical engineering decisions, ensuring that switchyards are engineered, designed, and constructed strictly to utility standards for seamless interconnection and handover.

You will own critical technical engineering decisions spanning utility interconnection of generation facilities, transmission design optimization, and MV collection system performance—from early-stage development through financing, construction, commissioning, and into operations. The role requires a strong balance of technical depth in HV switchyard/substation design and power system studies, combined with elite technical workstream management skills. You will direct EPCs, coordinate with utilities and equipment vendors, and align internal cross-functional teams to drive projects across the finish line on schedule and within budget.

What You’ll Do

Program Leadership & Utility Interconnection

  • Lead the technical program lifecycle for the design, engineering, and execution of HV substations and switchyards (115kV–500kV), ensuring all designs strictly adhere to interconnecting utility standards and specifications.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between internal teams, utilities, equipment vendors, and EPCs to manage utility interconnection requirements, design approvals, and switchyard handover processes.
  • Drive clear Divisions of Responsibility (DOR) matrices between the IPP, EPCs, and interconnecting utilities to solidify technical boundaries and delivery schedules.
  • Continuously audit program health to identify engineering or execution gaps and deploy proactive countermeasures to ensure successful switchyard energization and handover.
  • Own the utility interconnection scope, including technical review of applications, steady-state/dynamic models, and technical negotiations with ISOs and utilities (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT).

Design, Engineering & Execution

  • Direct EPCs, Engineers of Record, and consultants to optimize substation and transmission designs, reduce execution risk, and maintain schedule and cost targets.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols.
  • Support EPC RFPs and supply agreements by defining enforceable technical requirements and evaluating vendor proposals.
  • Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization activities.

Compliance & Project Finance

  • Provide NERC and regional regulatory (CAISO/ERCOT) compliance support, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to PRC, MOD, and related standards.
  • Contribute to Independent Engineer (IE) diligence and technical documentation for project financing.

What You’ll Bring

Experience

  • 12+ years leading technical scope and engineering programs for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems within an IPP, Utility, EPC, or engineering firm.
  • Proven experience managing EPCs, consultants, major equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams through a project’s lifecycle.
  • Direct experience with FACTS and Series Compensation, including fixed series capacitors for high-voltage transmission lines, SVCs, STATCOMs, and other Flexible AC Transmission Systems.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong working knowledge of NERC PRC and MOD standards and regional requirements (CAISO, ERCOT) related to transmission facility and plant operational compliance.
  • Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and design trade-offs (technical vs. cost vs. schedule).
  • Solid foundation in power system studies and working knowledge of steady-state modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, Aspen, or similar).
  • Advanced Excel skills for technical, performance, and financial analysis.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE).

Preferred

  • PE (Professional Engineer) license is highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (or related field); Master’s or PhD is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary + bonus: $190,000 – $200,000

  • Health & Wellness: 100% premium coverage for you and your dependents on medical, dental, and vision.
  • Time Off: Unlimited PTO, plus two company-wide breaks (Fourth of July and end of year).
  • Family Support: Up to 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, plus 6 additional weeks for birth parents; access to family planning support via Carrot and Maven.
  • Mental Health: Free access to Spring Health (5 free therapy and psychiatry sessions), plus a Headspace account via Wellhub+.
  • Retirement: 3% non-elective employer contribution to 401k or RRSP.
  • Perks: $150 monthly food stipend, $150 monthly cell phone/internet reimbursement, pet insurance, full home office setup, and free access to UrbanSitter ($625 quarterly credits), ActiveHero, and One Medical.
