About the Client

root/edge is partnering with a profitable, well-capitalized independent power producer (IPP) on this search. Our client develops, owns, and operates utility-scale clean energy assets across the U.S., supplying reliable, competitively priced power to utilities and large customers. With a multi-gigawatt portfolio of solar and battery storage already operating or under construction — and a deep pipeline behind it — the business is scaling quickly and investing heavily in the engineering talent that keeps that fleet performing.

This is a confidential search. We’ll share the client’s name and full details with candidates we take forward.

About This Role

This is the senior technical owner for HV switchyards, substations, and MV systems across the client’s solar and storage portfolio. Our client needs a strong, hands-on high-voltage engineer who can carry technical scope from early development through financing, construction, commissioning, and operations — and who can flex into program leadership, directing EPCs, coordinating with utilities and equipment vendors, and aligning internal teams to land projects on schedule and on budget.

As the client pushes utility-scale solar and storage onto increasingly constrained transmission networks, FACTS and Series Compensation — fixed series capacitors, SVCs, STATCOMs — are playing a growing role in how projects interconnect on time and perform once energized. Candidates who bring hands-on FACTS/Series Compensation experience will stand out, but this is first and foremost a strong HV substation and switchyard engineer role: that experience is a genuine plus, not a gate.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the technical program lifecycle for HV substations and switchyards, making sure every design meets the interconnecting utility’s standards and specifications.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison across internal teams, utilities, vendors, and EPCs — owning interconnection requirements, design approvals, and switchyard handover.
  • Set clear Divisions of Responsibility (DOR) between the IPP, EPCs, and interconnecting utilities to lock down technical boundaries and schedules.
  • Audit program health continuously, catching engineering or execution gaps early and deploying countermeasures to protect energization and handover.
  • Direct EPCs, Engineers of Record, and consultants to optimize substation and transmission designs, reduce execution risk, and hold schedule and cost.
  • Own the interconnection scope — application review, steady-state and dynamic modeling, and technical negotiations with ISOs and utilities (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT).
  • Where FACTS or Series Compensation equipment is in scope — fixed series capacitors, SVCs, STATCOMs — lead the technical review, sizing studies, and vendor coordination for that equipment.
  • Provide NERC and regional regulatory compliance support, keeping the fleet aligned with PRC, MOD, and related standards.
  • Build and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols.
  • Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization.
  • Support EPC RFPs and supply agreements by defining enforceable technical requirements and evaluating vendor proposals.
  • Contribute to Independent Engineer (IE) diligence and the technical documentation behind project financing.

What You’ll Bring

  • 12+ years leading technical scope and engineering programs for HV substations (115kV–500kV) and MV collection systems within an IPP, utility, EPC, or engineering firm.
  • A track record of managing EPCs, consultants, major equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams across full project lifecycles.
  • Strong command of NERC PRC and MOD standards and regional requirements (CAISO, ERCOT) for transmission-facility and plant compliance.
  • Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and the trade-offs between technical performance, cost, and schedule.
  • A solid foundation in power-system studies, with working knowledge of steady-state and dynamic modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, Aspen, or similar).
  • Strong analytical/Excel skills for technical, performance, and financial work.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE).
  • Exposure to FACTS and Series Compensation — fixed series capacitors on HV transmission lines, SVCs, STATCOMs, or other Flexible AC Transmission Systems — is a strong plus, though not required.
  • PE license highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s or PhD a plus).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation: USD $190,000 – $200,000 base salary + bonus + equity
  • Comprehensive health coverage for you and your dependents (medical, dental, vision).
  • Generous paid time off and company-wide breaks.
  • Paid parental leave and family-planning support.
  • Mental health and wellbeing resources.
  • Employer retirement contribution.
  • Additional perks, including home-office setup and monthly stipends.
