root/edge is partnering with a venture backed manufacturer of power transformers, distribution transformers and switchgear that is rethinking how grid equipment gets built. The company pairs US engineering with partner factories overseas and configures each unit late in the build. This lets it deliver in about a year, in a market where lead times often run several years. It was founded in 2024 and is backed by leading climate and venture investors. It already holds a nine figure contracted order book covering more than 10 GW of new capacity for US utilities, data center developers and renewable developers.
About This Role
You will own the mechanical design of power and distribution transformers, including HV units at 230kV and 345kV. That means the tank, core and coil structure, clamping, cooling and everything that has to survive short circuit, transport and the field. The company designs in the US and builds through partner factories overseas, so your drawings and calculations need to be right and buildable by a factory you do not sit next to. This is a small team where your call on the design carries real weight.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the mechanical design of tanks, core and coil assemblies, clamping and support structures, and cooling systems for power and distribution transformers up to 345kV
- Perform short circuit force, seismic, pressure and thermal analysis using FEA and CFD tools
- Design bushings, clearances, lifting and transport provisions to IEEE, ANSI and IEC requirements
- Work with US customers on RFQs, technical specifications and design reviews
- Drive design for manufacturing with the partner factories, and work with procurement on materials and suppliers
- Support prototype builds and factory testing, and lead root cause analysis on manufacturing or field issues
- Produce drawings, BOMs and design documentation that are complete the first time
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 7+ years of experience in transformer mechanical design
- Experience with HV power transformers at 230kV and 345kV, as well as distribution transformers
- Working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI and IEC transformer standards
- Experience working with US customer specifications and requirements
- Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks, Creo or similar) and FEA or CFD experience (Ansys or similar)
- Clear communicator who works well across time zones and with contract manufacturers
Preferred:
- Factory floor and test bay experience
- Experience designing for a contract manufacturing model
- Familiarity with transformer transport and site installation
