Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage - FACTS & Series Compensation (REMOTE US or CANADA)

REMOTE from $170,000 Permanent

United States · Remote

root/edge is engaged  by a profitable, well-capitalized independent power producer (IPP) that develops, owns, and operates utility-scale clean energy assets — a multi-gigawatt portfolio of solar PV and battery storage in operation and construction, with a deep development pipeline. Our client has delivered clean energy infrastructure at significant industrial scale and is backed by leading climate and infrastructure investors. The company name is shared with candidates under NDA once mutual interest is established.

The Opportunity

This is a subject-matter-expert role for a proven authority in FACTS and Series Compensation. As our client pushes utility-scale solar and storage onto increasingly constrained transmission networks, the ability to design and deliver series-compensated lines and reactive-power solutions is becoming decisive to whether a project interconnects on time and performs. We are looking for the person the rest of the room defers to on fixed series capacitors, SVCs, and STATCOMs — someone who has taken these systems from specification through energization and can own that scope end-to-end across a growing portfolio.

You will be the technical center of gravity for FACTS and Series Compensation — setting the standards, directing the EPCs and equipment vendors, and making the calls that keep transmission interconnections reliable, compliant, and on schedule. For the right expert, this is a rare chance to own a high-leverage, hard-to-hire technical domain inside a fast-scaling, well-capitalized IPP.

What You'll Own

  • Lead FACTS & Series Compensation as the domain expert — own the specification, design review, procurement, and delivery of fixed series capacitors for high-voltage transmission lines, plus SVCs, STATCOMs, and other Flexible AC Transmission Systems across the portfolio.
  • Direct the studies that justify and size these systems — subsynchronous resonance (SSR/SSCI), series-capacitor protection and bypass schemes, insulation coordination, reactive-power planning, and steady-state and dynamic performance across the interconnection.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority with utilities, ISOs, EPCs, and equipment vendors on series compensation and reactive-power scope — defining requirements, reviewing designs, and resolving the hard technical questions others can't.
  • Lead the technical lifecycle of HV substations and switchyards (115kV–500kV) that host this equipment, ensuring designs strictly adhere to interconnecting utility standards for seamless interconnection and handover.
  • Own the utility interconnection scope — technical review of applications, steady-state and dynamic models, and negotiations with ISOs and utilities.
  • Drive clear Divisions of Responsibility (DOR) between the IPP, EPCs, and interconnecting utilities, and continuously audit program health to close engineering or execution gaps before they threaten energization.
  • Set the standard — develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols; witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization.
  • Provide NERC and regional compliance support, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to PRC, MOD, and related standards.
  • Support EPC RFPs, supply agreements, and Independent Engineer diligence by defining enforceable technical requirements and evaluating vendor proposals for project financing.

What You'll Bring

  • Deep, direct expertise in FACTS & Series Compensation — this is the core of the role. Hands-on experience with fixed series capacitors for high-voltage transmission lines, plus SVCs, STATCOMs, and other Flexible AC Transmission Systems, ideally taken from specification through energization.
  • 12+ years leading technical scope and engineering programs for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems within an IPP, utility, EPC, or engineering firm.
  • Proven experience directing EPCs, consultants, major equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams through a project's full lifecycle.
  • Strong working knowledge of NERC PRC & MOD standards and regional ISO requirements for transmission facility and plant operational compliance.
  • Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and design trade-offs (technical vs. cost vs. schedule).
  • Solid foundation in power system studies and working knowledge of steady-state and dynamic modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, Aspen, or similar).
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE); advanced Excel for technical, performance, and financial analysis.
  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (or related field); Master's or PhD a plus. PE (Professional Engineer) license highly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is flexible and highly competitive. For the right FACTS & Series Compensation expert, our client will structure a package — base, bonus, and benefits — commensurate with the depth of specialized expertise this role demands.

The role also carries a strong benefits package, including fully covered medical, dental, and vision; generous paid time off and parental leave; retirement contributions; mental-health and wellness support; and a full remote/home-office setup. Full details are shared during the process.

Interested, or know someone who fits? This search is being managed confidentially by root/edge. Reach out for a discreet conversation and we'll share the full details under NDA.
