Senior Manager, Substation Engineering

Our client is seeking a Senior Manager, Substation Management to join a growing team in the energy infrastructure space. This role owns the full lifecycle of electrical substation projects, from early planning through energization, with accountability for safety, schedule, and budget. The Senior Manager will act as the central point of contact across clients, utilities, contractors, and internal teams throughout all project phases.

What You Will Do:

Project Management & Execution

• Build and maintain relationships with EPC suppliers offering substation engineering, construction, and O&M services
• Lead delivery of substation projects across greenfield, brownfield, upgrade, and expansion scopes
• Own project schedules, budgets, and forecasts from inception through closeout
• Drive compliance with contract terms and manage scope changes effectively
• Facilitate kickoff meetings, progress check-ins, and formal project closeouts

Engineering & Technical Coordination

• Partner with engineering teams on substation design covering HV/MV equipment, protection and control, and civil/structural elements
• Review and approve drawings, specifications, and technical submittals
• Support procurement of major equipment including transformers, breakers, relays, and control buildings
• Collaborate with Procurement and suppliers to establish inventory management processes

Construction & Field Oversight

• Direct construction activities spanning site preparation, foundations, steel erection, equipment installation, wiring, and testing
• Manage subcontractors, inspectors, owner's representatives, and commissioning teams
• Address field issues, RFIs, and constructability challenges as they arise

Operations & Maintenance

• Deliver fully documented turnkey handoffs to the Operations team at project completion
• Partner with Procurement to identify and stock critical spare parts ahead of operations turnover

Safety & Compliance

• Champion site safety plans and enforce company-wide safety policies
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NESC, and applicable utility standards
• Lead job hazard analyses and foster a proactive safety culture across all project sites

Client & Stakeholder Management

• Serve as the primary point of contact for all schedule, cost, and technical communications
• Develop and deliver clear project status reports to internal and external stakeholders
• Coordinate with utilities, AHJs, and permitting agencies throughout the project lifecycle

Financial & Contract Management

• Monitor project costs, labor utilization, and field productivity
• Execute Project Agreements under Master Services Agreements across all substation development phases
• Manage change orders, claims, and contract amendments with precision
• Support invoicing, cost-to-complete forecasting, and closeout documentation

What Our Client Is Looking For:

Required

• 5+ years managing electrical substation or T&D projects
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
• Hands-on experience working with and managing major substation EPC firms
• Solid grasp of substation construction, testing, and commissioning processes
• Track record managing schedules, budgets, and subcontractor performance
• Proficiency with project management platforms such as MS Project, Primavera P6, or Procore
• Ability to travel to project sites as needed (25-50%+ depending on workload)

Preferred

• Background in utility-scale or EPC substation environments
• Experience with high-voltage systems in the 69kV-500kV range
• PMP certification or equivalent credential
• Working knowledge of protection and control systems and relay testing
